Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing tropical storms more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events cause an average of millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
