TikTok Offers Users Control to Decrease AI-Generated Content in Timelines

The platform is rolling out a new feature that enables them to reduce the volume of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the service announced that it presently contains more than 1 thousand million content made with AI.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The update is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a full-scale launch. This development coincides with a increase in AI content, driven by new content generation software.

AI Content on Other Platforms

It has been noted that almost one in 10 of the fastest-growing video streams on a competing service exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A large amount of this material is deemed mass-produced AI material, a phrase for poor-quality, factory-style content that is typically absurd or bizarre.

Based on user feedback that numerous viewers appreciate content made with AI tools, from digital art to educational videos, and we aim to provide users the option to increase or decrease of that, depending on their own likes,” stated a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

The platform shared that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its service labeled as made with AI. Overall, over 100 m pieces of content are added to the service each day, making AI content a relatively small part of its total content library.

User Control Features

Members will be in a position to reduce or increase the level of AI content they view by opening the topic control option in the application and selecting the AI content topic. Other topics that currently be modified under the setting encompass politics, clothing, cosmetics, and movement.

Platform Guidelines

TikTok’s rules require content makers to identify “realistic” AI-generated content, and it forbids dangerous deepfakes of celebrities or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI video that is without a tag can be taken down under its user guidelines.

Additionally, the service will from now on attach an artificially created label to content created with its built-in AI features, or flagged by an cross-platform project for identifying artificial media. This step is intended to stop users from attempting to evade the labeling process.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is furthermore establishing a two million dollar educational fund for specialists and organizations to develop educational content about using AI responsibly. This initiative will benefit educational bodies focused on teaching computer science.

Moderation Strategy

The platform has defended its moderation strategy, following discussion over plans to cut jobs for a large number of safety staff in the United Kingdom. The company is expected to cut 439 jobs in its content moderation team in London, with trade unions and internet security professionals voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by machine-led review.

A senior executive explained that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can shield workers by eliminating the most graphic content prior to it is viewed by people. The platform reported a notable drop in shocking and graphic content reviewed by safety staff over the last 12 months due to reliance on its machine learning processes.

We believe it is crucial to balance people and machines to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we also think it’s extremely critical to limit contact with harmful content as rapidly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is making a difference work at speed.”
