Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies pose an existential risk to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual challenge facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
